The First Star Academy Summer Program at UConn

Each July for four weeks, First Star students entering grades 10, 11, and 12 live on UConn’s main campus in Storrs and take a full curriculum of classes, for which they may earn up to three college credits upon completion. They also participate in programs and extracurricular activities designed to prepare them for the challenges of the upcoming academic year and for college. Programming includes:

  • Courses in English literature and composition, science, math, and study skills, as well as electives depending on the students’ grade level
  • CAPT and SAT test preparation
  • College preparation seminars
  • Sports and other recreational activities on campus
  • Culturally enriching field trips
  • Mentoring and encouragement from UCONN students, faculty and staff
  • Seminars on leadership, self-advocacy, and independent living

Academic Year Program Services

During the school year, First Star Academy participants meet regularly with a Program Coordinator who monitors their personal academic progress and provides enrichment seminars. They also take part in:

  • Online tutoring in a variety of subject areas
  • Academic enrichment workshops
  • Cultural and social activities
  • Career and personal exploration
  • College trips
  • Saturday Academic Days
  • Mentoring by highly trained college students
  • Counseling and personal enrichment
  • College placement assistance

In addition, First Star provides foster parents with workshops on topics such as planning for college, the college admissions and financial aid process, and college resources.

Requirements for Participation

Students are expected to:

  • Commit to attending the entire four-week summer program
  • Attend an orientation
  • Agree to the program’s rules and regulations
  • Seek academic and personal support as needed
  • Maintain year-round participation in the program
  • Maintain good academic standing in high school
