The Iris Kinnard Emergency Loan Fund (IKELF) was established in 1991, the year of Iris Kinnard’s retirement from the University of Connecticut. She worked in the Center for over 20 years in a variety of capacities with her last role being that of Acting Director of Center for Academic Programs (CAP).
During her years in CAP, Iris often encountered students’ need for short-term loans to bridge the gap between the beginning of the semester and when their financial aid was distributed. Iris frequently and happily loaned money to the students from her own pocket so that they could buy the necessary textbooks and supplies even though oftentimes, the students were unable to pay her back. The IKELF was Iris’s parting gift to CAP students, a fund to which she herself has donated substantially. The IKELF continues to provide access to short-term loans for numerous students every term, especially during their critical first semesters.

SSS helped me in so many ways that I don’t know where to begin. In this program, I have an advisor whom I meet with regularly and she keeps me headed in a positive direction. Through this program I met so many great people and it opened up many opportunities for me. I hope to remain in the program until I receive my degree in Business and give back whenever I can.
