McNair Fellows Intro to Research: Rising Sophomores and Rising Juniors

McNair Fellow applicants (1st & 2nd year students): the application cycle is now closed and will re-open in January 2022, due mid-February.

In addition to students at the Storrs campus, regional campus students transferring to the Storrs campus for the following fall semester (when participation will occur) are encouraged to apply.

Students who are currently first year students (rising sophomores) or sophomores (rising juniors) can apply for this  program during their current spring semester. Program participation will occur during the following fall semester (of sophomore or junior year). Students will gain research experience as an apprentice/trainee while learning about:

  • STEM MS & PhD career avenues
  • Undergraduate research opportunities – during the academic year and summer programs
  • The more research-intensive McNair Scholars Program

McNair Fellows shadow STEM researchers for the fall semester, participate in a weekly UNIV course, and engage in academic writing and presentation exercises.

Eligibility:

(A) among the first generation in your family to attend a 4 year college AND meet the low income guidelines on the application chart based on your family size,

OR

(B) Self-identify as an underrepresented racial or ethnic group as listed on the application,

OR

if you are able to check off both (A) and (B).
